Cylinder installations – Finding the right company

As a homeowner, the thought of your hot water boiler breaking down and becoming damaged and/or faulty probably fills you with feelings of dread and despair, and may even keep you up at night, causing you to break out into a cold sweat. Despite this however, the unfortunate reality is that things can, and will, go wrong with your boiler from time to time, and more often than not, your cylinder may be the culprit, meaning that you may need to have a new one installed. Unfortunately, in today’s world, there are a lot of people out there who are, shall we say, not as professional or as skilled as they would have us believe, and so it is imperative that you avoid these individuals and only hire people that possess the necessary skills, experience, and qualifications to work on your hot water boiler and cylinder. Cylinder installations aren’t necessarily simple jobs, and they certainly aren’t something that any old average Joe can do, as there are certain rules and regulations in place. When it comes to cylinder installations however, finding the right company/workers to perform the installations is absolutely essential, which is why we’ve compiled this handy list for you. Contained within, we’ll be taking a look at a few simple tips regarding cylinder installations, that will help you choose the right company for the task at hand. So, without any further hesitation, let’s get started.

Cylinder installations London UK

Come up with several candidates – Using the internet, as well as Yellow Pages, and various other websites and magazines etc, you should take the time to come up with a list of several potential candidates to perform your cylinder repairs for you, as it is always nice to have other options. Find companies that are relatively local to you, find ones that are within your price range, and take a look at their websites and social media pages and see which services they can potentially provide for you. Although you will only be hiring the one company, it is always great to have other options and a plan B.

Read reviews and testimonials – A great way of getting a better idea of just how effective a cylinder installation company may be, is to take the time to browse the web and read reviews left by other people, about the company in general. Don’t necessarily read reviews on their website, as they could be biased and they could have the negative reviews removed. Look for reviews on independent sites, and see what other people have to say. Don’t be afraid of one or two negative reviews, because you can’t please everybody, but at the same time, if a company has a great deal of negative reviews and feedback, this may set alarm bells ringing and you may wish to avoid them and continue your search elsewhere. Don’t just look for a score or a rating either, actually read what other people have to say, as some people can be critical of the most trivial of matters.

Look at their experience – Although when it comes to cylinder repairs, all companies have to start somewhere, ideally you will want a company with a fair amount of skill and experience under their belts, so try to find companies that fit this criteria as well as possible. For example, if a company only just started trading a few months back, they probably won’t have that much experience and skill under their belts, because they haven’t been working for that long. The more experienced a company is, generally speaking at least, the better that will be for you.

Ask to read testimonials and see examples of their previous work – When contacting a company that you will potentially be hiring to work on your boiler for you and carry out various cylinder installations and repairs, don’t be afraid to speak to them and ask them to provide you with testimonials from previous clients, as well as samples of previous work they’ve carried out. If they’re reluctant to do this for you, you should ask yourself why that is, and it may be the fact that they have something to hide. On the flipside however, if they’re more than happy to provide you with what you need, this is a great sign of trust and honesty, which are two very admirable qualities, from both perspectives.

Ask for recommendations – Finally, if you are still struggling to find a company to perform your cylinder installations and repairs, simply take the time to ask for recommendations from friends and family members. Remember, every homeowner will have a boiler, and will probably have had to have some form of work carried out on it in the past, so you should take the time to ask friends and family members if they can recommend anybody. Ask them in person when you see them, and make use of social networking pages, and online forums and see what other people have to say.

Toilet Repairs – How to Care for your Bathroom

In terms of cleanliness, health, and hygiene in general, a lot of people think that the kitchen is the most important part of the home to keep clean, and will often admit to neglecting their bathrooms, which is far from ideal. Yes, ok, in the kitchen germs can easily be spread, especially when certain raw foods such as poultry, are handled, but in terms of cleanliness, health, and hygiene in general, the bathroom is actually the most important room of the house to keep clean, for pretty obvious reasons when you think about it. We all know what we do in our bathrooms, besides brush our teeth and clean ourselves, which is why toilet repairs and toilet maintenance, as well as general bathroom maintenance, is considered to be so important. Keeping your bathroom clean and hygienic however, is much easier said than done, especially if you have a fairly large family, and a pretty small bathroom. Despite this however, you should never use this as an excuse to let your bathroom become dirty and unhygienic, because that is then putting your health, and other family members’ health, at risk. Here are a few handy tips on how to care for your bathroom.Toilet Repairs London UK

Keep your toilet clean and well maintained – We all know what toilets are made for, and there is no point in getting grossed out because everything that goes on is a natural bodily function. In large families especially, toilets can get a lot of usage, and like all things in life, the more they are used, the more rundown they become. Toilet repairs and toilet maintenance companies are now thriving as people are finally waking up to the dangers associated with a dirty and inefficient toilet. Always make sure you flush the toilet after each use, invest in bleach and powerful anti-bacterial sprays and wipe the toilet rim, seat, and lid after each use, and use toilet cleaner and bleach on the inside and around the rim to kill off any germs. Germs and bacteria can thrive around the rim of toilet seats because it is dark, moist, and relatively warm. What’s more, flushing the toilet isn’t enough to get rid of them all, and what can actually happen is that flushing can displace them and make them air-born. Using bleach and cleaning solutions however, will kill them and keep them out of the air you breathe. Just make sure to thoroughly wash your hands after cleaning.

Vacuum and mop the floor – Bathroom floors can get dirty just like any other floor, except for the fact that due to splash back, and other nasty actions, certain substances can find their way onto the floor that are far from hygienic. Use a vacuum cleaner to vacuum dust and dirt particles up, and make sure to follow everything up with a quick over with a mop, which should contain hot water and bleach, or a specialist cleaning solution. This will not only clean your floor and have it looking nice and shiny, it will also help to destroy germs and bacteria. If you have carpet, obviously you won’t be able to mop, but truthfully, carpet in a bathroom is literally a breeding ground for bacteria, so you will want to get that changed ASAP.

Invest in a steam cleaner – Steam cleaners are absolutely fantastic when it comes to bathroom cleanliness as they will help cut through dirt and grime, plus, the scalding hot steam will destroy virtually all germs and bacteria that it comes across. You can use steam cleaners on the floor, on the tiles on the wall, on shower and tap heads, on mirrors and shower screens, and anywhere else for that matter. Steam cleaning will leave everything clean and shiny, plus it will kill germs and bacteria in the process.

Leave cleaning solutions to sit – When cleaning bathrooms, a lot of people will not exactly be relishing the thought of what they’re doing and so they will be in a rush to get in and out as quickly as they can. Because of this, they will spray cleaning solutions onto tiles, and toilet seats etc, and will then rinse and wipe them away right away. What you should do instead however, is spray the solutions, and leave them for a few minutes to allow them to do their jobs.

Regularly change your towels – A lot of people when getting dry after a bath or shower, will use the towel to dry off, and will simply hang it back on the radiator or towel rail. Now, even if the towel is heated up and becomes dry quickly, it can still smell after a while, and if there is even the slightest trace of damp, bacteria can breed. Besides which, damp towels smell like wet dog, and nobody wants that. Obviously you don’t need to clean and change your towels every day, but try to change them once every three days, in order to see the best results.

TV Licences: Do Landlords Need To Supply TV Licenses?

This has being a question that baffles most tenants as to whom is the responsibility of when it comes to providing TV Licenses. According to the law which states that, if landlords do not provide a TV license, then it is the responsibility of the tenant to purchase one.

In the UK, the rules governing TV licensing states that “As a landlord, you need to make sure that the property is covered by a valid TV licence, if you have provided the tenant a means to record or watch television programmes as they are shown on TV. This include devices such as computer, mobile phones, TV, Digital box, game console or DVD/VHS recorder.

TV Licensing London

Providing a TV license now becomes your responsibility (the landlord) if you have installed a TV. It only becomes the responsibility of the tenant only if it has been specified in the tenancy agreement.”

Where it becomes quite worrying is when an old TV is left in the rental property by landlords just as an add-on or simply to avoid the hassle of getting rid of it themselves.

Do not do this as a landlord maybe out of kindness or as an incentive to the property because it may backfire on you. If you provide the tenant with a TV, then you would have to provide them with a valid TV licence too. As stated above, the only in this case the tenant will have to acquire a TV licence is when it is stated in the tenancy agreement.

But tenants are not totally absolved because the TV licensing body state that “Tenants which include student tenants are to ensure that TV used in the rental property is validly licensed even if it was supplied by the landlord.”

If you are a landlord with a number of tenants who have a joint tenancy agreement, then you can provide only one TV licence but if each tenant has a different tenancy agreement, then you are expected to provide a different license for each of them.

Can the Tenant be a charge for the TV Licence?
Some landlords do charge for TV license fee in the form of slightly higher rent or service charge if they left a TV in their property. They do this to absorb the cost onto the tenant.

Lodgers and TV Licenses
Each lodger who rents your property either under a private agreement or Government’s rent a room scheme is to have their own TV licence if they have a TV. There is some exception to this: if the lodger is in a relationship with you and living with you, is cook/au pair/housekeeper or a family member.

Toilet replacement and installation – Tips on replacing your toilet

In terms of importance regarding decor, you may be surprised to learn that, following kitchens, people generally consider their bathrooms to be the second most important room to get right in terms of decor and styling, which is why people spend thousands upon thousands on new bathrooms, every single year. A toilet for example, although serving a pretty gross purpose, is absolutely essential for all households, and it can serve to be the focal point of many a bathroom, which is why choosing and installing the right toilet, is considered to be so important.

Toilet replacement and installation however, is not the simplest of jobs, which is why you may wish to seriously consider hiring professionals to come and install and replace your toilet for you. If you’re renovating your bathroom, or if you just feel like a new layout, a brand new toilet can make all of the difference to your bathroom, and if you are adamant that you wish to replace the toilet yourself, here are some useful toilet replacement and installation tips for you to consider.

Toilet installation Services London UK

Gather your materials – First and foremost, before you even consider replacing your toilet, you must first take the time to ensure you have all of the necessary tools and materials in place. A lot of people will begin a job without everything on hand, and so will waste time going back and forth grabbing items as and when they need them. By getting everything ready beforehand however, you can save yourself a great deal of time and effort. You will need:

  • New toilet
  • An adjustable wrench
  • A putty knife
  • A spirit level
  • A bucket
  • A replacement wax seal
  • A sponge
  • A tape measure
  • A hacksaw
  • A mask

Get rid of the tank – When it comes to toilet replacement and installation, once you have all of the tools necessary to begin, you will need to first red rid of your old toilet tank. First the toilet will need to be removed, making sure the water is switched off. You should flush the toilet and use the sponge to soak up any excess water. The bolts securing the toilet to the ground should be loosened and removed, before the toilet and tank can then be carefully lifted away. Take the tank outside and place it on the ground next to your skip, don’t throw it away just yet, just in case you forgot to remove a bolt or washer that may come in handy.

Take out the wax ring – Your next job will be to carefully remove the wax ring of the toilet. You should gently rock the toilet bowl back and forth, which should then work to loosen the seal and make it easy for you to remove. The bowl should then carefully be lifted up and away, and the putty knife should be used to loosen and remove the large wax seal. Using a clean damp sponge, make sure you wipe away any excess wax. Before you begin this process, it is advised that you wear your mask, as there is a possibly that harmful and smelly gases could emanate from the pipe below.

Fit your new bowl – Now the fun can begin, as the gross and nasty stuff is out of the way, so you can now focus on placing and installing your new bowl. A new wax seal should be placed around the pipe opening in the ground. The new bowl should be carefully aligned with the flange, and finally, to help set the wax seal, weight should gently be applied to help with the seal. You should then take the time to secure the bowl using the various nuts, bolts, and washers, before tightening them. Make sure to tighten them, but don’t over tighten them as this could cause damage to your shiny new toilet, and nobody wants that. If the bolts are a little too long, use your hacksaw to shorten them.

Finally, install your new tank – Now that the bowl is in place, the final job is to install your new tank and you will then be ready to rock. Press the gasket down onto the tank outlet, carefully position and centre the tank onto your toilet bowl, apply and assemble the various bolts and washers, and finally, tighten them alternately until the tank is level, which is when you should use your spirit level. If not, adjust the tank until it is entirely level.

Switch on the water – Now your toilet is installed and assembled, it is now time to switch the water back on. Switch it on, let the tank fill, and a few minutes later, give it a practice flush. If done correctly, the toilet should flush and fill itself like normal. Look for any leaks or signs of water escaping, and if you do notice any, switch off the water and discover where the water is coming from.
